Welcome to A Simple House of Sts. Francis and Alphonsus!
A Simple House is a Catholic, inner-city ministry serving low-income and project neighborhoods in southeast Washington, DC and Kansas City, MO. Our work involves meeting people in their neighborhoods, homes, and homeless camps. As an article of faith, we believe that conversion is possible for every human, but unfortunately, our society has written off troubled, inner-city adults as unreachable. Our missionaries strive to meet the material and spiritual needs of the poor.  Missionaries make an initial 10 month commitment and do not fund-raise a salary.

Mission

Our missionaries go out from our house in pairs to the poorest neighborhoods of our cities to meet the poor in their own homes and homeless camps. Friendship evangelization is the method we use to spread the Gospel. We serve each person in the context of a unique friendship.  Our missionaries help the poor carry their burdens and accompany them in their efforts to improve their lives and grow closer to Christ.

Prayer

Missionaries attend daily Mass and pray morning and evening prayer from Liturgy of the Hours. They observe "Grand Silence" in the houses until 9:20 a.m. to allow for personal prayer time. Missionaries are challenged to grow in holiness and continue to pursue a deeper personal faith. Our missionaries are given the special opportunity to radically dedicate themselves to spiritual growth while living in community with others trying to do the same.

Poverty

A Simple House is a place to respond to the biblical call to give to the poor and follow Jesus. Missionaries live a simple lifestyle in community without Wi-Fi, television, or air-conditioning. Other forms of distraction are limited to allow missionaries to concentrate on prayer, Scripture, and fellowship. We rely on providence by practicing personal and corporate poverty, and our missionaries do not financially profit from their work.
